Welcome to the The Gluten Free Granny

TGFG-twitter-profileI love to cook and as I have been off gluten, yeast, dairy and cane sugar for the last 35 years, I have developed some great recipes that actually taste like ‘real’ food. Yep, bread that tastes like bread, and pizza, pastries and choc cakes, slices and eclairs.  Well, you know, the essentials for life!

So here I am, 63 years old, the proud Mum of 2 wonderful daughters that fill my heart with more love and joy than I ever thought possible, and Granny of 3 amazing granddaughters that make my heart sing and overflow with love. How blessed am I?  Life is good!

I love life. I love the joy that a smile can bring. I love to hear a beautiful voice. I love to hear the birds singing. I love our dogs and our cat. Oh yes, and I love my husband. The man who has seen all sides of me, the good, the bad and the ugly! A man who has truly encouraged the best out of me, my true soul mate.  (And believe me,  I tried a few along the way but they never quite met the brief…you know what I mean!)

I love to sing and laugh and especially love laughing at myself,  and every day I wake up with joy and gratitude in my heart. I am so full of life and bubble with enthusiasm,  my husband says he needs to put weights on my feet to slow me down.  I am still working in my clinic and absolutely love helping my patients, some of them have been seeing me for over 25 years, and have become firm friends.

Here is a bit of my journey.

I grew up in Armidale, a small country town. As soon as I could I left to explore the world. My brother was a diplomat and had a posting to New Delhi, so I ventured there to spend an amazing couple of years seeing a side of life that changed my outlook to life and my attitude to living forever. I fell in love with the kindness and generosity of the people that had so little themselves. I fell in love with the food, and have cooked Indian curries regularly ever since. For me, India was one of the most spiritual countries that I have ever visited. It was inspiring to say the least.

Life was going along pretty well until my father and brother died 3 days apart. My brother was only 37 and I was devastated. You can read more about my story here. I had developed multiple allergies caused by the shock of their deaths and I had never had one food sensitivity until then. It was a long and challenging journey and so began a new beginning for me in a completely different direction to anything I had known.

My health background as a nurse meant that as my change of direction was accelerating, my views on health were changing, so I studied and qualified in nutrition and herbal medicine, and here I am today, still very busy in clinical practice. I had a clinic called the Allergy Prevention Clinic until about 10 years ago when  I moved my clinic and changed to the current name of Shavana Health.

Back when I discovered the multiple allergies I had there were no gluten-free products available. So I used to make corn flour pancakes for bread. Not nice. But better than nothing. Then I started to become adventurous in my cooking and in 1989 published my first book, Allergy Free Sweet Treats.  Then I followed that up with Allergy Free Recipes and a couple of years later I wrote The Allergy Link To Illness.

I started to teach classes in gluten-free baking, and have now developed a range of gluten-free flours that I sell from my clinic and now online. My daughter said, “Mum, you have so many recipes and so much health information you need to share it with the world”. So here I am. Joining the world of blogging, and maybe even tweeting, or Instagramming (is that a word?)…….who knows how far I will go. I have resisted joining the web world for so long, maybe because my husband is a programmer and can do all these techno things. But I surrender, and here I am. Blogging and tweeting……..I do hope you will join me and follow my blog and explore my baking world.
