Firstly don’t panic. As with most of these ‘outbreaks’ the hype is often worse than the actual issue. Fear is loved by the media, however, we do need to be vigilant and take as many precautions as possible.

Herbal Paste

You have probably seen the tubes of herbal pastes in the supermarket, or seen them advertised on TV. They are a great idea and a way that you can have annual herbs all year around for  your cooking delights!  Now you can make your own without any of the chemical preservatives added.

If you are a herb grower, now that the annual seasonal herbs are at their end, you probably have some bushes that are heavy with leaves and you may be wondering what can you do with them. You can dry them or you can make this paste. 

If you don’t grow any herbs but would like to make the pastes yourself, you can simply go to your local market and buy some fresh herbs. You will need a couple of bunches of each herb.

Herbs that work well for pastes are:

  • parsley
  • basil
  • coriander
  • oregano
  • mint
  • lemon balm
  • marjoram
  • chives

All you need are the herbs, olive oil and a food processor. The amount of olive oil is dependent on the amount of herbs you have, and the consistency that you like.

You can keep the paste in the fridge for a couple of weeks, or you can freeze the paste in ice cube trays. 


Wash and dry the herbs. Remove the leaves from the stems. Place the herbs in the food processor and add small amounts of the oil until you have a consistency you are happy with. 


We all know about clutter. Most of us have some of it somewhere, those special ‘things’ stashed away that we can’t bear to part with, after all we just might need them sometime! Some of us have lots of clutter. We see the TV shows about the extreme hoarders and the dreadful mess they live with, even dead mice or vermin and maggots under loads of papers or materials. A very real health hazard.  Fortunately not many reach this chronic stage of clutter in their homes. But many of us do reach this chronic stage in our body!

Clutter in the form of a sluggish digestive tract, a sluggish bowel, allowing food to stagnate and toxins to accumulate and ferment. Yeasts grow and multiply and worms (yes those little creepy crawlies) find a nice home to reside in. 

Clutter in the form of a toxic overload from pesticides, additives and preservatives in our foods, water, and air,  and  heavy metal residues.

Clutter in the form of emotion stresses. Work pressure, home and family stresses, anxiety, fear, negative self talk.

All of which weaken our immune system and leaves us more vulnerable to inflammation and infections. This is when many vague symptoms start to occur and it sets us up for a downward spiral into ill health. Chronic illnesses like allergies, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, hormone imbalances, recurrent infections, depression, weight problems, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other chronic degenerative illnesses develop.  The list is endless. 

So just as it is important to keep our homes and environment clutter free, so it is important to keep our body free of clutter.  I tell my patients to choose one month every year to do a spring cleanse and declutter their body. 

To do this  you need to use herbs to cleanse your body from worms and to treat your body for fungus, bacteria and viral infections, even if you feel fine and don’t think there are any bugs lurking in your system. They will be there! 

You need to eat clean for the month, that means lots of fruit and veggies and proteins, drink pure water, have no junk food and no alcohol at all for the month (email me if you would like a healthy eating plan for your declutter month).

You need to make sure you have regular bowel function and do skin brushing at least two times a week. You will need to get a good nights sleep, and do a daily relaxation either in the form of meditation or simply doing an hour a day of a hobby that you are passionate about. 

Have 2 or 3 sessions of acupoint detox to accelerate the release of toxicity from your body.

If you do your ‘declutter’ or otherwise known as a detox for one month each  year, you will have a stronger immune system and be far better equipped to fight off any bugs that come your way.

Carpet freshener

This is a lovely blend of essential oils that will freshen up your carpet.  Simple to make and free of nasty chemicals. You can combine the oils, or use any one of them.

Carpet Freshener

  • 1 cup Bicarb soda 
  • 20 drops Lavender
  • 20 drops Lemongrass
  • 10 drops Eucalyptus
  • 10 drops Cinnamon

You need a wide-mouthed jar with a lid. Add the bicarb and all the essential oils. Close the lid tightly and shake well to distribute the oils.  Allow 24 hours for the oils to infuse into the bicarb soda.   Sprinkle over your carpet and allow to sit for 15 – 30 minutes, then vacuum the powder. A bonus is that your vacuum cleaner will smell great too!

Do You Have Cravings For Certain Foods?

It’s probably fair to say that each of us will have a craving for a food at some time. Pregnant women are well renowned for having strange food cravings. It’s easy to remedy if you have a food craving, after all, you can just go  out and purchase that food and eat it, however there can be another side to food cravings, and that is that you may even be craving certain foods and not be aware of it. How can that happen?

Have a look at what you are eating each day. Is there a food that you have to have? We all know that coffee is addictive, and alcohol and tea and good old chocolate. How about if you just have to have potato chips regularly? If you just can’t walk out of the supermarket without the chippies in your trolly, without  your recognising it, you have a craving! It is subtle and not as glaringly obvious as chocolate or coffee, but there it is. How about when you go to the supermarket, armed with a shopping list, yet you can’t walk past certain foods without popping them into your trolly. Not just naughty foods, but fruit or veggies or meats. When you see something you think how nice that looks. Impulse buying or cravings?  Craving wins!  We see the foods, be it good for  us or not, and get a sense that we need that food. There could be a very good nutritional reason behind that impulsive buying. There could also be emotional reasons.

Lets look at some of the cravings and what they mean from a nutritional perspective:

Bacteria and viruses are all around us all the time. Despite who you are or where  you live, you just can’t avoid these little critters. The fact is, it’s not the bugs that are the problem, not ever. It’s you! It is your ‘terrain’ as Louis Pasteur said on his deathbed, I quote: “The germ is nothing; the terrain is everything.”

What that means is that your health depends on the strength of your immune system and your ability to ward off any bugs that come your way. And come your way they will! This is not a bad thing, as we need to get a cold one or two times a year to keep our immune system activated and  to allow our body to clean up the old dead cells that our body needs to shed.

Comfy carbs

Isn’t it interesting that when you have some yummy refined carbs such as breads, cakes, pasta, and chocolate as a treat, the next day you seem to crave them. Interestingly it can be almost the exact hour that you had your carb hit the day before. Sometimes after you eat a meal that has a high loading of carbs, like a pasta meal or rice, you can somehow be wanting to eat again after an hour or so, despite how much you have just eaten.

Carbs are an essential food and very important to add to our diet, but the down side is that refined carbs in particular are addictive, and lets look at why.

When you eat your carbs, as with all foods, a cascade of chemicals are released. With refined carbs, the chemicals travel from the stomach to the brain where we produce dopamine. This is a hormone and neurotransmitter that affects the pleasure and reward centre of our brain. Our pleasure response is activated, and we all like that feeling. A lot! We link that feeling with the food we are eating, and we want more of it, and more, and more. Hence the addictions to chocolate and cakes etc.

When you eat your carbs with a meal, do put a limit on the quantity, making your vegetables and proteins the king and queen of your meal. Let the carbs be the servants – giving you energy but not ruling how your body functions. Always combine carbs with fats. This helps to slow sugar absorption and control your weight and stabilise your blood sugars.

How much to have at a meal:

Carb = fist

Protein = palm

Fats = little finger

Veges – greens = grab all you can hold

Veges – starchy = fist


Here’s a topic that no one really likes to discuss, yet it is a problem that affects everyone at some point in their life. Constipation! It will raise it’s head somewhere and at some time no matter who you are, where you work, what you eat, what you drink, how you live. The bowel is a tricky little organ, and so often it seems to have a mind of it’s own!

What is constipation?

Defined as the absence of the urge to eliminate waste or as having difficulty in passing stools. However, in simple terms we all know it means you just can’t do a poo poo! I have seen patients that only have a bowel motion once in 2 weeks. I can’t imagine how this must feel. Being so clogged up and heavy, not to mention the serious negative health effects on the body. Symptoms of constipation are usually more than just the obvious lack of bowel function. Loss of appetite is very common, you may suffer with intermittent nausea, indigestion, low grade fever that comes and goes, headaches, back ache, fatigue, irritability and even some feelings of anxiety.

You may also develop haemorrhoids.

So the burning question is, can constipation be healed? Yes it certainly can.

There are several factors that need to be addressed, apart from the obvious dietary changes:

  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Stress
  • Emotional Issues

Relieving Constipation

Diet – You do need to load your diet with fresh vegetables and fruits. This way you get a good amount of fibre. Cooked vegetables are preferable to raw, so the bowel can eliminate more efficiently. Leaving the skin on fruit and vegetables helps to give you more fibre. Include grains, pulses, lentils and beans each day, and use some bran each day. Include yoghurt in your diet, but do check that it has live cultures in it. If not you can buy a probiotic and take as directed each day. The good microflora in the gut need to be plentiful to help keep your gut balanced and working in harmony.

Drink – water. I know you hear this time and time again, yet it still needs to be mentioned as so many of us just don’t drink sufficient water each day. Drink at least one litre of water, add your tea or coffee but do get some good clear water into your body each day. On waking have a large glass of water, cold or hot. You can have it with a slice of lemon in it or just plain good old water. I love hot water so each morning I sip a cup of boiled water with a slice of lemon. Delicious! 

Within one hour of rising, eat your breakfast. Never skip this very important meal. On a daily basis add my Fruit Spread to your diet. You could spread it on toast, or have it as a relish with grilled meats or chicken. You could add more prune juice and drink it either by itself or add to a smoothie.

Molly’s Anti-Constipation Fruit Spread

  • 1 cup prunes – pitted
  • 1 cup dates – pitted
  • 1 cup dried figs – chopped
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseed oil
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/2-1 cup prune juice

Place all ingredients into your blender or food processor and blend until you have a smooth paste. Spoon it into a jar and store in the fridge.

Dose: Adults take 1 to 2 tablespoons each day until your bowel is regular, then you can start to cut back as needed. Depending on the age of a child 10-16, use 1/2 – 1 tablespoon, and for toddlers over 3 use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon, diluted in apple juice. For a child under 3 it is advisable to see your health practitioner before giving any treatments yourself.

Vitamins & Minerals – Take fish oil and a probiotic each day.

Tissue salts – Mag Phos can be very useful for a number of health issues, and it is very beneficial for constipation. Taken internally at night, and as a cream rub on the tummy area each day.

Herbs – There are some very good herbal remedies that can help to regulate your bowel. Herbs such as cascara, yellow dock, senna, liquorice, slippery elm, psyllium.  Contact Molly to buy Molly’s formulated herbal tea ‘Relief”

Exercise – walking is such a good exercise to do as it uses all the muscles in your body. Swing your arms as you go, to stimulate lymph glands. No need to do a fast power walk, just a bit brisker than a stroll.

Stress – We all have it, and often lots of it. It can disguise itself as an old friend because we live with it every day and so think it is a normal part of life! Stress can be useful, but in most instances it is enormously detrimental to our health and wellbeing. Stress can be relieved in many ways. You can meditate or do some deep breathing exercises, or listen to a relaxing creative meditation such as my healing meditation which you can download here.

Emotions – Always a major player in any form of health issue or imbalance in your body. Your emotions can be the basic reason you become constipated in the first place. Take a moment, close your eyes and see if you can connect with any emotional reasons you may be ‘holding on’.
