Coronavirus

In the last 48 hours I have had over 40 texts and phone calls from patients asking how they can protect themselves and their children from this latest deadly threat. The Coronavirus.

Firstly don’t panic. As with most of these ‘outbreaks’ the hype is often worse than the actual issue. Fear is loved by the media, however, we do need to be vigilant and take as many precautions as possible.

Here is some basic info on the coronavirus, and how you can keep your immune system supported so that if you are in contact with the virus, you have better immune strength to deal with it.

Coronavirus is a common cold virus. It is a very large family of viruses, some affect humans, some affect animals. All of you will have had it many times over the years. Many times. We call it ‘the common cold’. Usually it is very mild, some sniffles and the usual cold symptoms, lasts a few days to a week, and then it resolves.

This is an excerpt from my E-Book ‘Treating The Common Cold Naturally’ which I wrote in 2013, and a new updated version will soon be available.

The coronavirus was first identified in the 1960s. It is thought to cause around 15-30% of all cases of the common cold. This virus is more active in winter and spring.  Generally this virus is self limiting and some people can be infected with  this virus yet have no obvious symptoms.

This virus will mostly infect the upper respiratory tract causing a mild illness with typical symptoms such as a cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and a fever, as well as causing gastrointestinal symptoms in some individuals. It can cause lower respiratory infections like pneumonia however this is not common and occurs mostly in immunocompromised people.

There are several known different stains belonging to the coronavirus; SARS being one of them. Also a new emerging strain is the MERS, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus. Identified in September 2012.

The coronavirus has a broad range of infection severity. The main symptoms being sore throat, runny nose, congestion, feeling tired, and sometimes a headache will accompany these symptoms.  So it has a range of severity depending on which strain you acquire. Coronaviruses can affect farm animals and domestic pets too.

It is when the animal strains evolve and spread to humans, that we get the serious issues. SARS and MERS both came from animals, and now we have a current form of coronavirus called ‘novel coronavirus 2019’  It was first identified in December 2019 when workers from a fish and live animal market  in China got sick. It is tagged 2019-nCoV.

Symptoms are that of a common cold.

  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Slight cough
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Fatigue

For some people, it can lead to pneumonia and this is the danger. There are no medical treatments for any form of cold, as it is a virus. And this is where natural treatments can help to support your body and give your immune system extra strength. If you get a cold, and you are worried about it, go to your doctor and get a throat swab done. Never hurts to be a step ahead!

So let’s get a plan of action and get your immune system ready.

Firstly your diet. Don’t eat any rubbish, that is the lollies, the soft drinks, chippies etc. The sugars and chemicals destroy your immune system.

Don’t eat out if you can avoid it. Take your lunch to work.

Daily wash your sinuses with a salt water rinse. Either one you make with boiled water and a ½ teaspoon of sea salt, or you can buy the nasal salt water sprays from the chemist. You can also get the salt sprays for kids. This is a great way to keep the bugs you inhale at bay. If you use the spray, you can carry it with you and use it several times a day.

Stay off dairy products for the next few weeks. Cow products are very mucus forming, and bugs love to get stuck in the sticky goo. So try some soy, almond or cashew milk, if you want a coffee or tea, or try going black. Avoid cheeses as well. Go Cow free. There are lovely alternatives at your health food shop and some in the supermarkets as well. Goat, sheep and soy cheeses.

Alcohol, avoid for the next few weeks. It won’t kill you I promise, but if your immune system is compromised from the sugars and chemicals in the alcohol, well ask yourself is it worth it?

Make chicken soup and have some daily. Just throw everything in all together, boil, simmer, and it will keep in the fridge for a few days. Let me know if you want my recipe.

Use Eucalyptus Radiata and Lemon in a diffuser. 4 to 5 drops is more than enough. Don’t keep it on all the time. The best way to use essential oils in a diffuser is to have them on for 10minutes, then off for an hour. Then on again. When you just leave your diffuser on all the time, you can become sensitised to the aroma, and you are unable to easily notice the aroma. This is called Olfactory fatigue. The air is still being saturated with the oil, you just can’t smell it. Remember to always buy pure oils.

N.B: never use eucalyptus around a child under 5. And do remember your pets will get to inhale the oils as well. So be mindful of what you use, how much you use, and how long you use it for.

Remember if you do get sick, stay home and keep your child home if they are crook. Don’t spread your germs.

Daily, take tissue salts, herbs and vitamins. Keep homeopathic remedies for use as any symptoms arise.

This is what I suggest you start to take now.

Tissue Salts

Tissue salts are one of the most important body balancing remedies we have. They are all vital to life. Twice a day take a combination of all the tissue salts, numbers 1 to 12. These are the main tissue salts used, and available as a single tablet combination in the health food shops. To better support your immune system, take numbers 1 ,2, 5, 6, and 11 in addition to that. Do remember I use a different brand of tissue salts to the ones you can get in the health food shops. The numbers do vary. I can make you a liquid formula if you don’t like the lactose in the pills.

Herbs

These are formulas that I make up. Most of you would have had some of these at some point in time.

  • Herbal Immune Boost Formula Tincture: Take 30 drops 2x day
  • Herbal Immune Tea:  Drink 3 or 4 cups a day
  • Mollys Magic Mushie Compound: Add to cooking or herb teas. Quite delish really!
  • Mollys Magic Immune Powder: Take 1 teaspoon in a glass of water 2x day.

Homeopathic Remedy

  • Oscillo: This is an amazing homeopathic remedy. More widely used in Europe than any other flu prevention medication. You can’t buy it over the counter, so email me if you want to order it.
  • Winter Woes: a combination to help prevent the onset of colds or flu
  • Flu Stop: a remedy taken throughout winter to help protect your body from colds and flu.
  • Congestion Breaker: a remedy to help clear any congestion.

Vitamins

  • Always good old Vitamin C
  • Cod Live Oil, liquid by Melrose
  • Zinc
  • Selenium

Some of the products aren’t available over the counter, and the herbs are combinations that I make up, so give me a call or email if you would like to order anything to have in your healthy medicine chest. Note my new email address:
